A quote from a little-known book called The Picture of Dorian Gray. This isn't actually fashion advice to women, but advice for Dorian on which women to avoid. Considering the 1890s (when this was published) was called the Mauve Decade, there were a lot of women Lord Henry didn't trust.
Ordinary women always console themselves. Some of them do it by going in for sentimental colours. Never trust a woman who wears mauve, whatever her age may be, or a woman over thirty-five who is fond of pink ribbons. It always means that they have a history.
